Comixology (at Amazon) Sales: X-Force; Winter Soldier; Gillen at Marvel; Kirby at DC

In this week’s Comixology (at Amazon) sales, Marvel drops prices on X-Force, Winter Soldier and the work of Kieron Gillen. DC highlights some deeper cuts in the catalog (and Jack Kirby). Oni may or may not be having a sale.

The DC Summer Sizzle Sale runs through Monday, 8/26.

And this week, DC’s mix of titles has a LOT of what we’d call “under the radar” books, many of which are featured a little less frequently. Fortunately, this is firmly in our wheelhouse to navigate.

Some highlights:

  • Checkmate – Greg Rucka / Jesus Saiz; Rucka’s take on the intersection of spies and superheroes
  • DC: The New Frontier – Darwyn Cooke’s look at the dawn of the Silver Age isn’t really under the radar, but it’s a truly great comic.
  • Deathstroke – Christopher Priest / Carlo Pagulayan; Missing the Titans crossovers, but this is a smart comic about villain that makes few bones about it.
  • Far Sector – N.K. Jemisin / Jamal Campbell; Superior worldbuilding as a new Green Lantern with an experimental ring investigates the first murder in living memory on a world without feelings. You could count Jemisin’s SF/F awards, but you’d need some time on your hands.
  • Flex Mentallo: Man of Muscle Mystery – Grant Morrison / Frank Quitely; An even further-out-there delight & Doom Patrol spin-off that, for legal purposes, has NOTHING to do with Charles Atlas ads…
  • Freedom Fighters: Rise of a Nation – Robert Venditti / Eddy Barrows; Just a very well done reworking of the original Freedom Fighters concept. Very under the radar, but we really enjoyed it. (Would work as an Elseworlds or Black Label.)
  • Jonah Hex – Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray and an absurd rotation of high end artists; Fun westerns, some arcs, some done in one
  • Omega Men – Tom King / Barnaby Bagenda; Before he blew up, King penned this meditation on line between terrorism and freedom fighters, which is arguably a Green Lantern tale (Kyle Rayner). Often overlooked.
  • Orion – Walt Simonson’s entry in the New Gods saga. We liked it as much as his Thor, which is to say, a lot! Totally under most radars.

The Marvel X-Force Sale runs through Monday, 8/26.

Yes, the mutant black ops team, as originally established by Cable (and morphing out of New Mutants). There absolutely have a been a few incarnations and relaunches over the years. Let’s start out with an overview of that:

  • X-Force ’91-’02 – Originally Rob Liefeld & Fabian Nicieza with Greg Capullo tagging in early on. The first edition, if you will.
    • Counter-X: X-Force – From the period when Warren Ellis was showrunning some of the X-titles, by Ian Edgington & Jorge Lucas
  • Uncanny-Force ’10-’12 – Rick Remender and rotating roster of Raphael Albuquerque, Esad Ribic, Jerome Opena, Billy Tan and Phil Noto
  • Uncanny X-Force ’13-’14 – Sam Humphries / Ron Garney / Dalibor Talajic
  • Deadpool vs. X-Force ’14 – Duane Swierczynski / Pepe Laraz
  • X-Force ’19-’24 – Ben Percy / Joshua Cassara / Robert Gill

What’s good? Our top pick is the Remender Uncanny-Force. Black ops and a wide ranging, but complete story unit when taken as a whole. We’re also fans of the Ben Percy / Krakoa era X-Force.  If you want something off-beat, start here for the Milligan/Allred run, which is a satire.

Journey into Gillen

Darth Vader  Journey Into Mystery  Sins of Sinister

The Marvel Kieron Gillen Sale runs through Monday, 8/26.

Yes, has has written quite a bit for Marvel over the years. Our favorites? An absolutely brilliant turn on Darth Vader with Salvador Larocca and his evil Star Wars analogue of Indiana Jones, Doctor Aphra w/Kev Walker. When the glass cracks in his Vader run… well, see for yourself. Great moment.

So let’s start out with a cleaner recap of the major items in this sale:

What’s good?  This one’s going to be more personal preference than with many sales and to that end, we’d definitely say Immortal X-Men and particularly Sins of Sinister, which was as good as X-Men Event as there’s been… but needs context from Immortal and the X-line of books. Past that, Journey Into Mystery is where Gillen really popped onto the Marvel radar, Young Avengers is the familiar team of Gillen/McKelvie and Gillen’s Mr. Sinister in Uncanny X-Men definitely has had influence.

The Sidekick in Winter

Captain America  Winter Soldier  The Winter Soldier: The Bitter March

The Marvel Winder Soldier Sale runs through Monday, 8/26.

This is a slightly odd sale, in that it encompasses most – but apparently not all – of Ed Brubaker’s Captain America run and then several miniseries and abortive attempts at an ongoing series… including a few creator names you’ll recognize.

The originating storyline runs in the 2004 series of Captain America by Ed Brubaker and a rotating squad of artists including Steve Epting, Michael Lark, Butch Guice and Mike Perkins. There are a couple omnibuses available, but this doesn’t really have a definitive larger collection like, say, the Hickman Avengers era.

Note: if you’re going to read the Winter Soldier saga, you’re going to need Captain America: Reborn, the Ed Brubaker /Bryan Hitch mini-series that wraps up the “Death of Captain America” sequence.

For solo series, the first choice is Winter Soldier by Ed Brubaker, which is Brubaker and Butch Guice in a spin-off.

Let’s Put the X in Sale

The Marvel Dawn of X/Reign of X Sale runs through Monday, 1/16.

What is this sale? Following House of X/Power of X, the X-Men line of comics has a suggested reading order in the back of the books. If you read from issue to issue, particularly during the Dawn of X era, you really did get an additive experience and more of a view of the X-universe.  These two runs collect the individual issues of ALL the X-titles in a reading order for the line.

Dawn of X picks up after HoX/PoX and runs up to X of Swords (which isn’t on sale). Reign of X picks up after X of Swords and ends just before Trial of Magneto and Inferno.

An Extra X Sale

The Marvel X-Force Legacy Sale runs through Monday, 1/16

Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender with art by Jerome Opeña, Phil Noto, Esad Ribic and a whole bunch of others would be our top choice. A particularly dark take on X-Force as black ops, much of it weaving in and out of the labyrinthian plans of Apocolypse.

The original X-Force has come Epic Collections available and we always like the value of those. You can pick your era here.

The X-Force portion of Peter Milligan & Mike Allred’s run that would soon become X-Statix is conveniently available as a single volume.

Send Them Pak-ing

The Marvel Greg Pak Sale runs through Monday, 1/16.

Pak’s been over in the Star Wars universe lately, and that’s on sale, but we always associate him very strongly with Hulk.

Planet Hulk, written by Pak with art by Carlo Pagulayan, Aaron Lopresti and Gary Frank was where Pak really broke wide. This one has Hulk exiled to a planet where he effectively becomes that world’s Conan. It’s now a classic.

For unknown reasons, World War Hulk is not in the sale. (Yes, that seems boneheaded to us, too.)

But Pak was on Hulk for the ’09-’11 series with Paul Pelletier as the lead artist.

A bit less remembered, Pak returned to Hulk in ’17 with Greg Land and Carlo Barberi to revisit the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk storylines.

Resurrecting A Sale From the Dead

The DC Journey to Lazarus Planet Sale runs through Monday, 1/16.

That’s a mouthful of a sale title, but DC’s got an event in the offing that will raise some things from the dead like Lazarus… or a Lazarus Pit.

Scroll down a bit here and you’ll find the James Tynion 4.0/Jorge Jiménez and first volume of the Josh Williamson (and so many different artists) run of Batman on sale. Here’s a quirk for you. The collected editions started a new Volume 1 for Tynion’s run, but because the single issues didn’t renumber, the collected editions are on the same page as the Tom King run.  And they wonder why it confuses the bookstore managers?

Nightwing looks to have a big role in DC’s next wave, so the current volume is mostly on sale. (A couple volumes in the middle aren’t for whatever reason.) The current Tom Taylor/Bruno Redondo run being one of DC’s most celebrated offerings.

And for something off the beaten path, that’s also interesting to see in the runup to an Event, there’s Zatana by Paul Dini. Yes, after marrying a magician, you’d think Dini would have a feel for the material, wouldn’t you? The artists on this include Stephanie Roux, Jamal Igle and Cliff Chiang.

Shelving Sale

The Top Shelf Sale runs through Monday, 1/23.

Top Shelf is an imprint of IDW and much of it is on sale right now.

They Called Us Enemy is probably the de facto flagship title for Top Shelf and it’s won a lot of Awards. That would be the graphic novel adaption of George Takei’s memoir and play of growing up in an internment camp by Justin Eisinger, Steven Scott and Harmony Becker.

For something a little more out of left field, The Bojeffries Saga is Alan Moore and Steve Parkhouse from the early 80s doing a darker, more horror-forward riff on The Adams Family/Munsters spliced with Monty Python. The originals mostly ran in Warrior and A1. It’s a entertaining series from a different side of more than you usually see.  (The March of the Sinister Ducks side.)

Comixology Sales: Star Wars, X-Force, Atomic Robo, Iron Fist, Captain Ginger, Frank Miller and Douglas Rushkoff

This week’s Comixology sales have Marvel putting Star Wars, Iron Fist and X-Force up for discounts. DC’s goes “deluxe” (and we sidestep their superfolks). Indie science fiction is highlighted and Dark Horse crime is on sale.

Marvel Comics Presents: Stars, Fists and Force

Marvel’s X-Force Sale runs through Sunday (1/31). There are several eras to X-Force over the years, two of the stand out to us:

The Rick Remender years, where X-Force went black ops and the storyline was extra dark was a standout – particularly in regard to it’s contemporaries at Marvel during that time period.  Jemore Opena was the primary artist, but there were a lot of artists tagging in and out in that period. It’s collected Uncanny X-Force by Rick Remender  Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

The polar opposite of that would Peter Milligan’s and Mike Allred’s run on the title.  A goofy period of the feature that would soon be renamed X-Statix.  It’s collected inX-Force Vol. 1 and Vol. 2

The Star Wars Legends Sale runs through Sunday (1/31).

This sale is largely about the Dark Horse titles (and we’ll note that neither Agent of Empire or Legacy are present), but we’re thinking you might be interested in a couple older things: The Star Wars newspaper strip, which begins with Russ Manning and ends with a lengthy Archie Goodwin/Al Williamson run. Mmmm… Goodwin/Williamson.  Then there’s the original Marvel run, which has even more Archie Goodwin.  That said, we’ve always thought the David Michelinie/Walt Simonson run that’s part of V.4 of the Epic collections hasn’t gotten enough love.  Especially when they were working under the constraints of the time period between Empire and Return of the Jedi.

The Iron Fist Sale runs through, you guessed it, Sunday (1/31).

Three things stand out here. You can start at the beginning with the  Iron  Fist Epic Collection that collects the original Marvel Premiere run and the Claremont/Byrne solo title.

That, of course, leads directly into Power Man & Iron Fist, which has Epic Collections on sale and is more of a fun-forward, occasionally goofy take on the character.

Finally, there’s Immortal Iron Fist, the excellent (and more recent) take on Iron Fist and the guardians of K’un-Lun.

Let’s talk about non-cape DC books

The DC  Deluxe Sale runs through Monday (2/1). This sale is theoretically about DC’s hardcover collections, which is a little counter-intuitive when talking about digital. It also might not make for the best price points, which is a common complaint about DC’s sales.  So let’s look past the usual superhero fare that you can find most weeks and concentrate on the unusual.

Frank Miller’s Ronin is what Miller originally left Marvel for. It’s a sort of science fiction/fantasy mashup concerning a samurai’s quest to kill a demon that lands the titular Ronin in a dystopian future, adding a touch of cyberpunk to the mix.

Marshal Law by Pat Mills and Kevin O’Neill is most easily described as Judge Dredd with superheroes. Quite possibly an inspiration for The Boys, too. Marshal Law is charged with policing superheroes. It’s a vicious satire of the genre and something of a trendsetter that the general audience wasn’t always quite sure what to make of when it came out.

Sheriff of Baylon is a bit more recent. It’s Tom King’s and Mitch Gerads’s mystery/thriller tale of murder and political maneuvering inside the Green Zone as a contractor attempts to train the new Iraqi police force.  One of King’s best works.

Indie Science Fiction Comics

The Small Press Sci-Fi Sale runs through Monday (2/1). Which is to say indie comics and it’s an unusual mix.

Atomic Robo by Brian Clevinger and Scott Wegener is pure, distilled fun. A robot created by Nikolai Tesla takes on mad science, Nazis and dinosaurs.  As one does. A delightful amusement.

Captain Ginger by Stuart Moore and June Brigman is a space opera about evolved cats on a spaceship built by humans after all the humans were wiped out by an invasive alien species… that’s still chasing the cats. Another fun comic from Ahoy, which has a fairly tight lineup.

Testament by noted cyberculture/media critic/journalist/academic Douglas Rushkoff and Liam Sharp (currently wrapping up on Green Lantern) was actually a Vertigo comic, back in the day. It appears the rights reverted.  It’s a tale about history repeating itself split between the near future and Biblical times and the evolution of religion with a resistance cell’s struggle in parallel with Biblical actions. You can save a dollar by buying the $0.99 single volumes instead of the omnibus.

The Dark Horse Crime Sale runs through Monday (2/1).

We really can’t say enough about Blacksad: The Collected Stories. Wonderful hardboiled detectives stories and amazing art. Click through and look at the preview.
