Comixology (at Amazon) Sales: A Big Wonder Woman Sale, plus… The Invaders

A mid-week look at Comixology (at Amazon) Sales. Why? Because there’s a very large Wonder Woman sale that takes quite a bit of effort to break down into digestible sections.  Plus, The Invaders are on sale, including a recent run that was largely ignored and is worth reading.

Golden Age Avengers

Marvel’s Invaders Sale runs through Thursday, 3/24.

This would be the WWII super team built around Captain America & Bucky, the original Human Torch & Toro and Namor, the Sub-Mariner. They invaded Europe and fought the likes of the Red Skull, Master Man, Warrior Woman, Baron Blood and U-Man.

Invaders Classics: The Complete Collection is the best pricing for the run and we’d put the first volume as slightly stronger than the second. V.1 is Roy Thomas and mostly Frank Robbins on art. Yes, Robbins on superhero comics is a divisive thing, but Invaders is where he fits best.  Don Glut joins in the writing fray in V. 2 and the art rotates a bit more, notably with Alan Kupperberg. The early sequence introducing Baron Blood is particularly good.

Invaders

The most recent Invaders flew under most radars, but it was a personal favorite here at the Tower of Cheap. Chip Zdarksy, Butch Guice and Carlos Magno. That book launches today, it gets a little more attention, but Zdarsky was not yet at his current profile level in ’19. This is a modern day tale of Cap, Winter Soldier and the original Torch trying to figure out what’s going on with aggressive military stances in Atlantis. Of course, there’s palace intrigue under the sea, but this also serves as a Sub-Mariner series, providing some explanations for different characterizations of Namor over the years and wrapping up some of his subplots across various titles. It’s a really solid comic and we were sad it ended.  This is one extended story, so you need to get both volumes.

We also liked the Stern/Epting collection and Avengers/Invaders, but those are the top picks here.

It Makes You Wonder…

DC’s Wonder Woman and the Amazons Sale runs through Monday, 4/4.

This is another one of those extra hard to navigate, jumbled up sales. We’re going to do what we did with the Batman sale and break this down into the individual titles, so you can browse little easier.

  • Sensation Comics – these are the “Golden Age” archive editions and have the early issues of Wonder Woman in them, too.
    Sensation Comics (Single Issues) – If you prefer the Mr. Terrific and Wildcat backups be included, the single issues are $0.99. That might be the everyday price, too.
  • Wonder Woman (’42-’86) – The early issues are filed under Sensation Comics, so this listing is “Best of” collections and the collected “12 Labors” from the 70s.
    Wonder Woman (Single Issues) – The original run is not complete, but a lot of the single issues are available and most of them are $0.99. Again, looks like $0.99 is the everyday price, too.
  • Wonder Woman (’87 – ’06).  OK, this is odd. Amazon has TWO DIFFERENT collected edition pages for this run.  That’s… not real efficient.  At any rate, this is the series that starts out with George Perez, then Messner-Loebs/Deodato, John Byrne,  Phil Jimenez and finally the first Greg Rucka run. (With a few creators in between those entries.)

If I were working at DC, I’d probably ask Amazon what’s up with this link structure.

Wonder Woman (Single Issues ’87-’06) – again, mostly $0.99 and that seems like the everyday price.

OK, that was kind of exhausting.  Recommendations? Sure. Go back to Sensation Comics (either version) and get a look at how strange and subversive the original comics by Moulton and Peters were. Lotsa bondage in a kids’ comic setting.

Go to the ’87 series and get some Perez. For a lot of people Wonder Woman started with Perez. The Rucka + multiple artists run at the end of that series is also excellent.

The return of Rucka with Nicola Scott and Liam Sharp is also excellent, but you can save a little money if you get that in the first two volumes here.

And a couple one-offs we can also recommend:

Wonder Woman: Dead Earth by Daniel Warren Johnson is a helluva fun ride. Diana awakens in post-apocalyptical hellscape, fighting off the monsters trying to eat the human survivors and trying to remember why and how long she was unconscious. Listen to metal while you read it!

Wonder Woman: The True Amazon is Jill Thompson’s award winning OGN and it is absolutely gorgeous to behold.

Comixology Sales: Spider-Man and the Spider-Verse; X-Men and Phoenix; Wonder Woman and IDW Horror

This week’s Comixology Sales highlights include Spider-Man and X-Men from Marvel, good discounts on Wonder Woman from DC and an IDW horror sale for Halloween.

The Spiders From Another Dimension

The Marvel Spider-Verse Sale runs through Sunday, 10/24.

Which is to say, the Spidey family, as built around a couple Events that you go into prelude and post-Event volumes, because… Marvel’s sales department.

The center of the activity here is the titular Spider-Verse omnibus.  Morlun’s up to his old tricks and ALL the Spider-Men across the various dimension must act.  The omnibus contains the Amazing issues and the crossovers, so you’re looking at Dan Slott, Christos Gage (yes, Gage covering deadlines — it’s a thing!), Peter David, “Hopeless” Dennis, Adam Kubert, Olivier Copiel, Mark Brooks and a ton of others.  Roughly 600 pages of Spidey to keep you out of trouble.

And the follow-up to that is Spider-Geddon.  This one has a little smaller scope than Spider-Verse.

Now, if you’re talking the extended Spider-family, Miles Morales is the character we most associate with the phrase “Spider-Verse.” The omnibus editions are the ones on sale here and you can do a lot worse than the Bendis / Marquez /Pichelli run.  Some would say this (particularly Spider-Men, which followed) was top of the final Marvel years for Bendis.

The Marvel Phoenix Sales runs through Sunday 10/24.

This is a fairly straightforward and small sale. X-Men Epic Collection: The Fate of the Phoenix is a classic of medium.  Accept no substitute and go for the Epic Collection.

The Wonder Woman 80th Anniversary Sale runs through Monday, 10/25.

Last time out, we looked at earlier Wonder Woman titles, this time we’ll take a look at New 52 on.

Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang (with Tony Akins and Goran Sudžuka drawing a few issues) launched the New 52 edition of Wonder Woman. It’s a darker, alternate take on Wonder Woman’s origins. Some would prefer you treat this one like an Elseworlds story. A sacrilegious a take on the mythos as it maybe be, it’s also one of the best comics to come out of the New 52.  That said, when the Azzarello/Chiang era stops with Volume 6, we would advise you to stop there.

For the Rebirth Era of Wonder Woman, we love the first arc(s) where Greg Rucka returns to undo the Azzarello run (no, really) with Liam Sharp and Nicola Scott alternating parallel stories.  Save a couple bucks with the first omnibus editions in the run or get the first 4 regular collections for this.

And for something a little different, do you remember Matt Wagner’s Trinity? Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman get together to thwart a Ra’s al Ghul plot. Save yourself a buck and get the original (prestige format) issues for $0.99 each.

Revenge of the Trick or Treaters

The IDW Horror Sale runs through Thursday, 11/4.

Yes, it’s the most magical time of the year… for the undead.  There’s plenty for your Halloween appetite rite now, er… right now.  Two things that spring to mind are:

From Hell – Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell collaborate on a very dark exploration of the tale of Jack Ripper. It’s a thick volume and has garnered a veritable ton of accolades over the years. The current edition is in color, “with pictorial revisisions for color by Eddie Campbell, as the cover says.” Be aware, in League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Alan Moore does more of a Victorian pastiche.  The tone here is way different.  This is a horror sale.

30 Days of Night is an important book for IDW.  Never mind the movies, this Steve Niles/Ben Templesmith comic was an important early hit that helped put IDW on the map.  The premise is one so obvious, you’ll hate yourself for not thinking of it first. (Those are always the best ones.) Bad Things happen when a group of vampires realize that in rural Alaska, the sun goes down for a whole month at a time.

Comixology Sales: 70+% off for Wonder Woman’s 80th Anniversary

DC’s celebrating Wonder Woman’s 80th Anniversary with a Comixology sale… a sale with a lot of 70%+ discounts. No, we were NOT expecting that level of discount two weeks in a row… but we could get used to it.

Yes, Wonder Woman has been around for a bit… and in a shock move, DC is celebrating with good discounts!  Trick or treat, my friend!

Have you ever sampled the original William Moulton Marston / H.G. Peters stories? Wonder Woman: The Golden Age collects the tales from Sensation Comics and Wonder Woman, suddenly on the cheap.  V. 1 is 77% off for $3.99.  V.2 & 3 are 75% off for $4.99. Cheaper if you’re stacking a Comixology Unlimited discount.  This run features a lot of bondage and submission themes that will make your jaw drop, but apparently flew under the radar at the time.  The early rogues gallery includes The Cheetah, Mars and The Duke of Deception.

“Modern” Wonder Woman is considered by many to start with the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths George Perez run. This volume of the title starts with Perez’s now classic and mythology-centric revival, then you get William Messner-Loebs/Mike Deodato, Jr. Run, a John Byrne run, Phil Jimenez gets a turn and then it ends up with the highly regard first Greg Rucka era. You can pretty safely go wild with the Omnibus section for this volume and what’s not collected there is $0.99 per issue. Each run has it’s fans.

You may have heard of Jill Thompson’s Wonder Woman: True Amazon? It won the best original graphic novel Eisner and was kind of a big deal.  $3.99 – cheap.

If you want a particularly out there version of Princess Diana, there’s always the Black Label Wonder Woman: Dead Earth by Daniel Warren Johnson.  It’s a heavy metal version of Wonder Woman awakening in a post-apocalyptic dystopia and slaying monsters as she gets a grip on what’s happened while she slept. Very fun book.

The 2006 series of Wonder Woman is probably best known as the Gail Simone era, so this is where you seek her out.

We’ll assume you know the regular series since New 52. In general, we like the Azzarello/Chiang (most find it a sacrilegious take on the character, but that’s Brian’s motif) and Ruck / Sharp / Scott runs quite a bit.

Lots of 70%+ discounts and most of the single issues are $0.99, so have a good browse while the prices are low.

Comixology Sales – Justice League, Deadpool, James Bond, The Witcher, Critical Role and The Guild

The highlights of this week’s Comixology sales include all manner of Justice League comics, a birthday for Deadpool, James Bond, Tini Howard’s Marvel work and some gaming properties over at Dark Horse.

The Deadpool 30th Anniversary Sale runs through Sunday,  3/7.  And there’s all kinds of Deadpool on sale.  That said, there’s one thing that really took us by surprise:

Did you realize there are 23 volumes of Deadpool Classic? Some of the more recent runs of the flagship series are listed as their own sets, but that’s a lot of Deadpool!

Marvel’s writer of the week

The Marvel Tini Howard Sale runs through Thursday, 3/11.

We’re happy to recommend Excalibur by Howard and (primarily) Marcus To.  The first two collections feature the mechanizations of Apocalypse and shenanigans in Otherworld.  The pair will take you right to the precipice of X of Swords.  And yes, you’ll eventually want to read X of Swords. That was the best comics crossover Event in recent memory.

And by “teamwork,” they mostly mean Justice League

The DC Teamwork Sale runs through Monday, 3/8.  It also is divided into three sections – Graphic Novels, Single Issues I and Single Issues II. You’ll want to keep a close eye on prices for this one. Some of the offerings, particularly the ones that are hardcover in print are not at particularly good prices for a digital sale.  Pretty much everything in the graphic novels will be available for 99-cents/issue  and the single issues might be cheaper.  There are also more single issues available that haven’t been collected as graphic novels, so the single issue sections are worth a browse if you have the time.

JLA is the ’97 series that launched with the Grant Morrison/Howard Porter run. The collections  are priced lower than the singles here and there are some more unusual runs later in the series you can cherry pick as singles if you don’t like what they’re packaged with in the graphic novels: #94-99 is a Chris Claremont/John Byrne arc.  (We wouldn’t say it’s quite up to their X-Men run, but it’s sure a novelty.) #107-114 is a Kurt Busiek/Ron Garney run.

Justice League of America is the original ’60s into ’80s title.  The “Silver Age” collections offer a better rate per issue, but the entire run is available as single issues.  You can cherry pick some 100 page spectaculars or pick up the Steve Englehart/Dick Dillon run (starting with #139).

JLA Year One doesn’t seem to have a graphic novel edition available in digital right now.  This is a 12-part series written by Mark Waid and Brian Augustyn with art by Barry Kitson. It’s a fun 90s take (yes, there were comics embracing fun in the 90s… just not that many) on the Justice League’s origin.

The Brave and the Bold in this case refers to the recent Liam Sharp series teaming Batman with Wonder Woman in an adventure through Celtic mythology.  This one is cheaper to pick up the single issues.

Games people read

The Dark Horse Video Game Sale runs through Monday, 3/15.

This might really be more of a gaming sale than strictly a video game sale.  A few things of note:

Critical Role is the adaption of the popular streaming show of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The digital issues were some of the best selling comics on Comixology while it was being serialized.

The Guild is an adaption of the Felicia Day web comedy about a group of gamers. Day does the writing and Jim Rugg provides the art for Volume 1.

The Witcher Omnibus… you could say this is a comic based on a game or you could say its a comic based on a series of books.  The Witcher is as transmedia as a property can get these days. Paul Tobin is your scribe with a rotating cast of artists.

The Dynamite James Bond Sale runs through Thursday, 4/1.

Dynamite has several 007 titles, but there’s one that stands above the others for our dollar: Kill Chain by Andy Diggle and Luca Casalanguida. It might just be the perfect repositioning of Bond for the modern era.  Finding himself in the middle of a “Kill Chain” of assassinations, Bond discovers his old foes at SMERSH have reemerged and are trying to draw MI6 and the CIA into conflict.

Comixology Sales: $0.99 Marvel Masterworks and Holiday Sales from DC, Dynamite and IDW

Looking for some Comixology sales?  Welcome to the holiday sale season.  All these new sales are running into January, too.  $0.99 Marvel Masterworks are good and Cheap. DC, IDW and Dynamite are also catering to your discount needs.  Many of these sales are “linewide,” which means pretty much everything is on sale from those publishers.  Been waiting for something to go on sale? It’s probably there.

Marvel gets CHEAP

Do you like classic Marvel?  If so you will LOVE the Marvel Masterworks sale (Amazon link) and might not get any further than this.  Volume 1’s are $0.99 and the rest are $1.99.  The page counts are always good and sometimes GREAT and you can’t beat the price.

The best buy here, and maybe the best buy on all of Comixology, is probably Black Panther Masterworks V. 1. That’s the entire Jungle Action run written by Don McGregor with art by Billy Graham, Rich Buckler and Gil Kane.  A truly excellent run that established a LOT of the character’s cast, especially Killmonger.  330 pages of excellence for $0.99?  If you haven’t tried it, this is the time.

You want a LOT of pages for your 99 cents?  Check out  Killraven (AKA War of the Worlds).  This post-apocalyptic band of freedom fighters throwing off the Martian yoke clocks in at 471 pages.  A lot of creators were involved with this, but it’s fondly remembered as a Don McGregor/P. Craig Russell feature.  And yes, it includes the graphic novel.

For something a little more off the radar, everyone remembers Jim Starlin’s Captain Marvel run. It was the first round with Thanos.  Hardly anyone remembers that Steve Englehart and Al Milgrom had an enjoyable run right after Starlin. That would be Captain Marvel Masterworks V. 4 and can be yours for a lousy $1.99 (V. 3 is the main Starlin run and grab that one if you haven’t read it.)

Head to the main link for an extended browse.  There’s a lot of very cheap classic comics and you don’t need me to tell you about Avengers and X-Men.  I will say that Doctor Strange is pretty solid the whole way through and if you like Golden Age Marvel and Atlas-era Marvel, pay close attention to the final two sections on the page.

Next up, we have the Marvel “Greatest Runs” sale.  Yes, it sounds like they need more fiber, but there are some superior deals here, too.

We’ve always been big fans of the Matt Fraction / Salvador Larroca run of Invincible Iron Man and the whole run is alternating $2.99 and $1.99 per volume.  Great prices.

Mark Waid’s superlative Daredevil run gets the omnibus treatment at $3.99 a pop.  This one starts out with Marcos Martin and Paolo Rivera as the main artists and then settles into Chris Samnee as the lead for the duration. It probably falls into the modern classic category.

Immortal Iron Fist is an incredibly fun series that’s collected in 2 omnibuses.  Volume 1 (482 pages) is primarily written by Ed Brubaker & Matt Fraction and primarily drawn by David Aja. Volume 2 (474 pages) is primarily written by Duane Swierczynski and drawn by the criminally under-rated Travel Foreman. Yes, you’ll want both volumes and you’ll probably want more Fat Cobra, too.

DC’s Holiday Sales

DC has a couple different sales conveniently located on one page.  And really, this one looks a lot like the Black Friday sale.

First up is a Wonder Woman sale… with 69 items!  <eye roll> Yes, DC… we see what you did there.  </eye roll>

For Wonder Woman, you can  click here and two classic runs begin and end the Omnibus section.  Wonder Woman by George Perez is the post-Crisis rebirth and actually wraps up with the War of the Gods volume.  Towards the end of the Perez run, you get some early Jill Thompson art, too.  That run really set the table for modern Wonder Woman.  At the end of the section is Wonder Woman by Greg Rucka, which is also an absolutely fantastic run.

For the general graphic novel sale — and this is linewide, so while almost everything is there, here are a some ideas of things that might not immediately jump out:

Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra is getting a TV show pretty soon and it’s a great series.  Make sure you scroll to the Omnibus section — they’re same price as the “regular” collections, so double up the page count!

Swamp Thing: The Bronze Age Vol. 1 is the original Len Wein/Bernie Wrightson run.  There’s a reason it’s a classic and it’s well worth your time.

We were always fans of Paul Levitz’s Doctor Fate and it sure didn’t hurt our feelings that Sonny Liew drew most of it.  Killer creators and an interesting way to get back to Fate’s Egyptian roots.

Dynamite’s Holiday Sale

The Dynamite Linewide Sale comes in three parts: Graphic Novels and then single issues broken up into A-P, P-W and W-Z.  (Amazon link) It pretty much is the entire line.  When you’re looking at the graphic novels, remember that the majority of single issues are $0.99, so 6 single issues = $5.94. Be pure, be vigilant, be cheap!

As for what we’d draw your eye to, three things come to mind as we flip through the pages.  Howard Chaykin’s American Flagg! is a hugely influential science fiction series with liberal does of satire.

The Shadow Masters Series is the absurdist and subversive take on The Shadow from the late ’80s by Andy Helfer, Bill Sienkiewicz and Kyle Baker (with a an extra special appearance by Marshall Rogers that almost defies description… old vendettas, children acting out and a nurse who used to be a professional wrestler.  It’s really something else.

Here at the Tower of Cheap, we’ve been waiting… and waiting… on the collected edition of the Christopher Priest/Ergün Gündüz Vampirella run and it keeps getting pushed back.  We keep hearing good things and the ever-reliable Priest on Vampi is so counter-intuitive, it’s probably worth it.  Guess what?  The single issues are (mostly) $0.99 if you want to get a jump on the collections.

IDW Holiday Sale

The IDW Linewide Sale is broken into SIX parts: Graphic Novels I, Graphic Novels II and then single issues I, II, III and IV.  (Amazon link) Which is to say, a whole lot o’ stuff.  What might we point you at the might otherwise slip your mind?

Bloom County: The Complete Library – A classic comic strip by a classic cartoonist.  Essentially, the whole archive is on sale.

Like Walt Simonson’s Thor? Then you need to check out Ragnarok. Valhalla has fallen and the survivors of the realm are picking up the pieces.  Although not everyone who survived is necessarily alive. Walt returns to the Norse mythos and it’s some of his best work.  Possibly the best thing IDW’s published.

Richard Stark’s Parker is another contender for the best thing IDW’s published. Darwyn Cooke adapts the crime novels about a professional thief who takes double-crosses extra personal. You might know the source material from the films like Point Blank and Payback.
