Best of the Marvel Epic Collection Sale
What are the best Epic Collections available? Let’s add a constraint. Since this is .cheap, what are the best Epic Collections currently on sale for $6.99? (Which is not to say there aren’t EXCELLENT collections at higher price points, but there is an image to maintain, yes?)
- (early) Amazing Spider-Man – Stan Lee / Steve Ditko / John Romita, Jr. / Gil Kane / Gerry Conway / Ross Andru; Hit the link and scroll down until you start seeing the Epics. Here’s the thing with Amazing Spidey: it didn’t have more than a stray misfiring issue here and there for a really long time. Take all the volumes listed for $6.99 and if you like Spidey, you’ll be fine with everything you get
- Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection: Kraven’s Last Hunt – J.M. DeMatteis / Jim Owsley (Priest) / David Michelinie / John Romita, Jr. / Mike Zeck / Mark Bright; One of the most iconic arcs of the ’80s, plus Spider-Man Vs. Wolverine
- Avengers Epic Collection: The Final Threat – Gerry Conway / Jim Shooter / George Perez / John Byrne / Jim Starlin; The return of Wonder Man. Doctor Doom. Ultron. The finale to Starlin’s first Thanos saga
- Avengers West Coast – Steve Englehart / Al Milgrom / John Byrne; The excellent (then titled) West Coast Avengers have $6.99 volumes from Englehart & Milgrom through John Byrne’s controversial run
- Captain America Epic Collection: The Secret Empire – Steve Englehart / Sal Buscema; A consequential volume. Besides the classic Secret Empire arc, the Serpent Squad debuts, the second Baron Zemo debuts, and The Falcon gets his wings
- Captain America Epic Collection: The Captain – Mark Gruenwald / Tom Morgan / Kieron Dwyer; Gruenwald’s most famous arc – The government repossesses the mantle of Captain America and gives it to John Walker, the former Super-Patriot.
- Daredevil: Heart of Darkness – Ann Nocenti / John Romita, Jr.; Things start to get delightfully weird in the iconic Nocenti/JRjr run as ‘Ole Hornhead tangles with Mephisto, Blackheart and The Inhumans
- Doctor Strange Epic Collection: Master Of The Mystic Arts – Stan Lee / Steve Ditko; Doctor Strange debuts as a fully formed strip and the Lee/Ditko run is a great ride
- Fantastic Four Epic Collection: The Coming Of Galactus – Stan Lee / Jack Kirby; There much to be said for any Lee/Kirby volume, but this one is where the FF starts to really take off as the Frightful Four lead into the debut of The Inhumans and then the Silver Surfer and Galactus appear
- Iron Man Epic Collection: The Man Who Killed Tony Stark – Archie Goodwin / George Tuska / Johnny Craig; Archie Goodwin set the early standard for Iron Man and most of his run is in this collection
- New Mutants Epic Collection: The Demon Bear Saga – Chris Claremont / Sal Buscema / Bill Sienkiewicz; The Claremont / Sienkiewicz run in general, and Demon Bear in particular, marks the high point of the title.
- New X-Men Modern Era Epic Collection: E Is For Extinction – Grant Morrison / Frank Quitely / Leinil Francis Yu / Igor Kordey; Enter Cassandra Nova as Morrison’s run begins
- Silver Surfer Epic Collection: Thanos Quest – Jim Starlin / Ron Lim; Jim Starlin takes over, post-Englehart, and brings back Thanos as the chess pieces start to line up for The Infinity Gauntlet. Also includes Thanos Quest.
- X-Factor Epic Collection: All-New, All-Different X-Factor – Peter David / Larry Stroman / Dale Keown / Joe Quesada; Peter David begins his original X-Factor run and things get offbeat
- X-Men Epic Collection: Second Genesis – Len Wein / Chris Claremont / Dave Cockrum / John Byrne; Give them a couple issues to get warmed up and an iconic run begins
- X-Men Epic Collection: Proteus – Chris Claremont / John Byrne; Proteus, the Savage Land and the debut of Alpha Flight as a great run continues
- X-Men Epic Collection: The Fate of the Phoenix – Chris Claremont / John Byrne; The Dark Phoenix saga is a high note
Speaking of Best…
The DC Best of 2024 eBooks Sale runs through Monday, 1/6.
It probably would have been better for you if you picked this up in the last two weeks of December, but there are some legit good books in this stack.
- Batman Vol. 3: Joker Year One – Chip Zdarsky / Jorge Jiménez; A joker writes The Joker!
- Batman: The Adventures Continue: Season Three – Alan Burnett / Paul Dini / Ty Templeton; A continuation of the classic ’90s cartoon continuity by the brain trust behind it

- Shazam! Vol. 1: Meet the Captain! – Mark Waid / Dan Mora; The gods behind the magic word start acting up as Waid & Mora move Captain Marvel back towards the original concept
- Superman Vol. 2: The Chained – Josh Williamson / Gleb Melnikov; Who has Luthor been keeping buried in a vault?
- Titans Vol. 1: Out of the Shadows – Tom Taylor / Nicola Scott; As the Church of Blood reforms, the Titans try to solve The Flash’s murder before it can happen
- Titans: Beast World – Tom Taylor / Ivan Reis / Travis Moore; Spinning out of Titans, this Event has Beast Boy pushing himself a little too far to stave off an extinction event. Plus, Doctor Hate
- Wonder Woman Vol. 1: Outlaw – Tom King / Daniel Sampere; A dark tale of propaganda, alienation and the secret Sovereign of the US
- World’s Finest Vol. 4: Return to Kingdom Come – Mark Waid / Dan Mora; Probably our favorite current DC title as Waid’s Kingdom Come prequel continues. V. 3 also on sale.
- World’s Finest: Teen Titans – Mark Waid / Emanuela Lupacchino; A tale of the original Teen Titans in the spirit of the ongoing World’s Finest title
The Horror! The Horror!
The Titan Comics: The Horror, The Eerie & The Strange Sale runs through Friday, 1/31.
We sometimes hear digital comics readers bemoaning the lack of single issues in these sales. Guess what? We have $0.99 single issues and that will color what format is the cheapest, too.

- Single issues (cheaper)
- Bloodborne – Ales Kott / Piotr Kowalski
- Single issues (cheaper)
- Brother Nash – Bridgit Connell

Unannounced Sales
It appears that Dark Horse has most of their collected editions on sale, but not the newest material and not the single issues. Here’s a link that will *eventually* get you through their catalog in a very laborious way and with the single issues mixed in. (It’s not perfect, but we’re trying.) We think this will run through the weekend, possibly to Monday.

Under the radar alert: you don’t hear about this much anymore, but The Life and Times of Martha Washington in the Twenty-First Century is a Frank Miller / Dave Gibbons collaboration with a different tone than Miller’s commonly associated these days. It’s a lot closer to Halo Jones than it is to Sin City or the later Dark Knight volumes.
